President Buhari and the Betrayal: I Saw it Coming

I wrote and published the essay with the above caption on my Blog on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. This morning, while visiting my Blog, I could see that some people were reading the essay over and over again (from the hits). So, I decided to read it as well. However, getting to the final paragraph, emotion took over the whole of me. And I had difficulties absorbing it.

President Buhari did put in place an inner circle as I suggested. Rather than selecting real Progressive Mavericks in the image and reputation of Mallam Aminu Kano, Abubakar Rimi, or Balarabe Musa, and consistent with the populist agenda of APC, he went for the worst kind of Feudal Lords within his tribal enclave. These selected few, cashing in on his reputed ethnic and religious bigotry, wasted no time escalating nepotism and ethnic chauvinism into a new pedestal, unprecedented in the history of our recruitment into federal institutions and organizations.

"In sum, President Muhammadu Buhari's success is going to be defined by how his Presidency prosecutes fraudulent Nigerians, and to what extent he is able to recoup the money stolen by public servants and political leaders. Adding to that, the President must put in place a formidable and energetic team to consummate the change as propagated. How he assembles that formidable team, depends largely on the nationalistic (ethnic and religious neutrality) and the progressive state of mind of his invisible core team - these are the people the President consult with behind the scene. Whatever the state of mind of these group, President Buhari should always remember that it is a PROGRESSIVE DISPENSATION and not a Military Dictatorship. Therefore, he should resist any attempt for outside interest to hijack the process. So, Mr. President, let the revolution be televised. If not now, when? If not you, who? Those who plundered our commonwealth and looted our treasury should be made to forfeit to the State (Nation) every Naira in their possession. You are about 72 years old; you are not in want of new wealth or craving for new friends. Nothing else matters anymore, but the soul of a troubled nation. You have nothing to lose, Mr. President, but Nigeria has everything to gain. Let the revolution be televised. My Comment today, April 28, 2019.

Everything I feared about President Buhari, all that I counseled against on his assumption of office, came to pass.

In spite of everything, I must move on. I have forgiven myself for the unquestioned support I gave to APC in 2015, because of these two sentences "Whatever the state of mind of these group, President Buhari should always remember that it is a PROGRESSIVE DISPENSATION and not a Military Dictatorship. Therefore, he should resist any attempt for outside interest to hijack the process." He gave the mandate to outside interest (the Cabal) and did not remember that it was a PROGRESSIVE DISPENSATION.

Indeed, I saw it coming, but I never knew it would be this egregious, so apparent, and so soon in the life of the administration.

While the cabal was strategizing on how to displace and dilute Asiwaju Tinubu's influence or dominance within APC hierarchy, Senator Saraki and Barrister Dogara Yakubu (my classmate at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos) of the House of Rep, took advantage of the vacuum created to emerge as the President of Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.

I published this essay before his wife cried out loud about the cabal taking over Aso Villa. And years before Asiwaju Tinubu's wife came out lamenting how her husband was pushed under the Bus after the 2015 Presidential inauguration.

As things are today, it will take years to clean up the ills he visited on our Security Networks, the Armed Forces, and the Police Force. Conscripting captured Boko Haram sect into our Armed Forces is a crime against humanity.

President Buhari never for ones subscribe to the notion of One Nigeria, forget about his participation in the civil war.

This administration corrupted our Armed Forces and the entire Security apparatus to the extent that they can't even police the President own backyard right now.

Blood is eating away our land and they have no solutions in sight. Yet, he is a retired Major General of the Nigerian Army.

Why and how a group this bigoted, sadistic, corrupt, vindictive, wicked (Dasuki, El Zakzaky, and Igbo hatred) are in control of the leadership of a country like Nigeria at this time of the human race is beyond my understanding. If you endorse nepotism, if you surround yourself with people who subscribe and practice nepotism, if you surround yourself with corrupt people, you are prim and proper an epitome of corruption and nepotism.

What about those clamouring for restructuring, especially the Yoruba, Niger Deltans and Igbo, as the way out of our problems? Vanguard Newspaper April 28, 2019

"Forget about the unnecessary clamour. Whatever government you have, as long as there are no free, fair and legitimate elections; as long as the system controlling the development of our nation is not based on public interest but self-interest, the clamour for restructuring and confederation is all rubbish. Those who talk about restructuring and true federalism, if you ask them, they have nothing to justify it than talking about ethnic nationality; they are not talking about real national issues like unity, like democracy and development in the country. They are not talking about issues that compare us with developed countries in the world; they are talking about things that compare us with the worst people. Nigeria, with her resources, should be compared with one of the five most blessed countries in the world. But these so-called leaders are busy talking about voting into office this useless person or voting out that useless person into the presidency, into the legislature or into the government house at the state level, without demonstrable credibility and experience. That is all they are talking about."

My Comment:

To some extent, I agree with him on principle. The philosophy underlying his argument is sound, but remains totally and unequivocally an illusion. The truth is that his Hausa/Fulani powerbrokers will not allow the kinds of leadership that will push or implement the philosophy that he articulated to emerge as leaders at the national stage. Most often, we had to contend with the worst kinds within them. If I may ask, how come Alhaji Balarabe Musa has not gotten any federal appointment since his impeachment in the Second Republic? How come he is not part of Buhari's inner council or cabal or Abacha's confidants? After all, he is Mallam Aminu Kano protege and a populist/progressive thinker. Now you know why the Yoruba, Igbo and Niger Delta political leaders are pushing for True Federalism and Restructuring. You killed and maimed to secure power at the center, but you are starkly lacking in the rudimentary of governance. We are not asking for True Federalism or Restructuring because we have the crude oil in the Niger Delta. It is as if that geographical section of the country is a curse to the entire country. In the past fifteen years, it was Boko Haram, now it is Bandits. By the way, were it not for the killings in Zamfara and Katsina States, Southerners would not have known that Gold Mining is going on in the Northern region. Who issued the license? How and when? Now you see the problems we have with President Buhari and Northerners like him - and the main reason the demand for True Federalism will not abate. Late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua would have made a difference, but he died too soon.

ON INEC SERVER: Mr. F. Keyamo's Tweet Lacks Merit in Law and in Facts

Keyamo tweeted: “Without referring to any particular pending Election Petition, there’s a need to generally guide Nigerians not to gullibly fall for the fantasy created by any video circulating where INEC official(s) spoke of INEC’s plan to electronically transmit results before the elections. “The video(s) of some INEC official(s) expressing intention to electronically transmit results are only circulated for entertainment. That procedure is neither contained in the Electoral Act nor in INEC’s Guidelines. Courts are only guided by these documents and not such videos.“Also, what you plan to do may be different from what you actually did. Assuming INEC planned to transmit electronically, the moment it said after the election that it did not do so, the matter ends there, especially as the Electoral Act and the guidelines do not allow it to do so." As a friend and a classmate at Bendel State University and through to the Nigerian Law School, I resolved not to criticize Mr. Keyamo or write an adverse comment about him throughout the Presidential campaign and election period. And I did exactly that. Today, politics is over. The election is over. It's now about the case in court. And it is about strategy and tactics; therefore, we are bound to defer. And where we do, I will state my position.

I am one of those who shared in the social media, the video that Mr. Keyamo referenced and attacked, not for lack of authenticity, but on the ground that INEC did not comply with its own laid down rules. And that's very sad.

At the Tribunal, according to Punch Newspaper and other sources, "Atiku and PDP went on to list 13 ad hoc staff of INEC who all testified that they, indeed, uploaded results from their polling units to the INEC server as instructed during their training." That by itself punches holes on Mr. Keyamo's tweet, to wit, INEC DID NOT UPLOAD RESULTS.

So, on the argument that "what you plan to do may be different from what you actually did," as Mr. Keyamo stated, I beg to add that it is complete hogwash and unproductive fishing expedition. And it makes a mockery of the whole electoral process. In that case, INEC sets itself up to fail. That argument is too shallow to withstand informed scrutiny. Certainly not a smart move as my friend would want Nigerians to swallow or the Tribunal to accept.

The purpose of electronic transmission of vote counts from the polling units to the server or from the collation centers to the server is to eliminate the ills in the electoral process that Atiku/Obi alleges. Going by Mr. Keyamo's argument, it is apt to conclude that INEC Chairman, circumvents every laid down rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, just name it, to ensure that the ills in the system that enable manipulation of votes remain. In that case, his bogus results or verdicts cannot be attacked in the court of law or tribunal in the absence of documentary or electronic evidence.  And that's is aiding and abetting electoral malpractices. Tampering with evidence or preemption of likely evidence carries the same weight as suppression of evidence. 

Analysis

We already have rules and regulations set up by INEC to facilitate a credible and error-free electoral process. So, availing your clients (INEC) with a defense of non-compliance with the same rules and regulations set up by INEC, in other to defeat allegations of rigging and manipulations of vote counts suffered by the aggrieved party (Atiku/Obi) is grossly asinine and professionally reprehensible.

The gentleman on the video who succinctly articulated those rules and regulations regarding electronic transfer of vote counts on national TV is a trusted and reliable Commissioner of INEC. Tweeting that you didn't comply with them on election day as a defense has no merit in law and no place in real jurisprudence. 

Mr. Keyamo's tweet is made nonsensical to the extent that the evidence put forward by the 13 ad hoc staff of INEC who testified "that they indeed uploaded results from their polling units to INEC server as instructed during training," is consistent with the views of the INEC Official on video - the same video that Mr. Keyamo is lampooning today. So, what are we talking about! At this juncture, one may be forced to ask, is Mr. Keyamo following the deliberations at the Tribunal?

His tweet lacks merit in law and in facts. Transmission of results electronically from the polling units to the server at the national headquarter of INEC is not a legislative requirement and doesn't need any ascertainable provision or a specific section of the Electoral Act to be effective or legitimate. It is simply an administrative exercise. INEC has the power to do it or adopt whatever process or measure that it deems feasible in conducting the election. 

Electronic transmission of vote counts from the various polling units to the national server as INEC arranged and as the official in the now condemned video rightly articulated and as the 13 Ad hoc staff stated that they did is to add credibility to the process. The goal is to eliminate discrepancies between the vote counts recorded at the polling units and the vote counts announced at the collation centers. If it is jettisoned, then, INEC is CULPABLE. But in the instant case, it wasn't, in light of the testimony of the 13 Ad hoc Staff. So, all these legalese or mumble jumble by Festus doesn't add up in law, equity, or reasonable judgment. INEC Chairman must produce the server and all the attested documents at the polling stations. The Atiku's Legal Team deserves them as of right. I beg to conclude.
