In UAE, the Leadership saw a dream, built on it, and Dubai was born for Nigerians and Nigerian Politicians and Top Military Officers to love, cherish, and invest in. On the other hand, in Nigeria, the leadership couldn't Hope, couldn't Dream, or fathom any Vision of urban renewal or for sustainable development. We had the Almighty Dollars as they did in UAE. While the King and his Kingdom went for the sky in UAE, achieving the impossible, in Nigeria, we went about burying the Almighty Dollars that we couldn't squander inside underground sewage, not knowing what to do with them. Please, see the picture above and below.
Nigeria and the Redundancy of the Political Elites.
The Minister in charge of Highways in Nigeria was a Governor in Lagos State for eight years where the picture above was taken. He is a Lawyer by training. And he's been a Federal Minister of Works, Power, and Housing in the last four years. In a similar vein, Rotimi Amaechi (a graduate of English Language) was a Speaker for eight years in the Rivers State House of Assembly. He was also the Governor for eight years in the same state. And presently, a Federal Minister in charge of Aviation in the last four years - twenty straight years in public service, that's assuming he did not hold any public service position prior to becoming the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Now, this: If the system is not working to expectations as it ought to be (taking all the existing decaying infrastructural facilities and the standard of living of Nigerians into account), why perpetuating the same faces on the governed? It is just about common sense. The Lagos/Badagry Expressway, like the Mile2/Orile/Apapa/Iganmu Highway has become an impossibility. And that is in a State where the Minister of Works was a Governor for eight years.
The Mono-Rail in Port Harcourt is caput. The chaotic traffic situation in Lagos is one of the worst in the World. Yet, the major characters who presided over the affairs in these states are still being celebrated by President Buhari as great achievers. Do a perusal of his Ministerial Lists to gain insights into why Nigeria is not catching up with the rest of Africa countries in infrastructural development.
A CEO of a Power Distribution Company, otherwise known as DISCOS, was widely reported paying himself a salary in the Millions every week from proceeds extorted from unregulated billing of customers for the electricity he didn't supply. Today, in spite of the Judgment of the Court of Appeal regarding the mandatory installation of smart meters in homes and residence of customers by DISCOS, the practice of "prepaid billing" without smart meters is still in vogue throughout the country. Meanwhile, the Chief Law Enforcer overseeing the Power sector is a Lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
