Nollywood needs to devote more resources to its scripts. The industry has some of the most beautiful actors and actresses any studio can boast of anywhere in the whole movie world. But the major setback is the script. Nollywood's stories are dated and crude. These fine actors and actresses cannot go beyond or perform outside of the materials presented before them. And that's why most often they come across as naïve and ridiculous.
Asking for Government's sponsorship, funding or support is courting censorship and undue interference with your content. And that is the last thing you want. Most of them are driving Rolls-Royce and live in exotic houses, but you cannot afford to set aside at least One Million Naira to support budding writers.
Mirror in the Sun, when it came out in the early 80s was the best thing to happen to Nigerian TV audience outside Dynasty and Dallas. As it began to garner nation-wide attention, NTA killed it. But went ahead and devoted national resources to promoting Cock Crow at Dawn, making it the national program. So, you don't want the government's intervention or support.
At the time Mr. Richard Mofe-Damijo came into acting and entertainment business in Nigeria, Mr. Tyler Perry of the Mama Madea fame was a nobody in the US Movies and Entertainment Culture. Mr. Perry was rejected by Hollywood. And to his African American folks already in the industry, his arts were unworthy of the Black race. And he was, not just under-rated, but side-stepped.
Today, Mr. Tyler Perry owns the largest Movie Studio in the whole of the United States of America. Meaning he has the largest Movie Studio in the Whole World.
AY is doing a wonderful job. But, he must work on his storylines to gain global acceptance.
