We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, or to a tyrant or dictator, and we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator. We don’t take an oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America, and we’re willing to die to protect it. Every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, guardian and Coast Guardsman, each of us commits our very life to protect and defend that document, regardless of personal price. And we are not easily intimidated.” - The former US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark Milley.
General Mark Milley is a highly respected and distinguished military leader who demonstrated his commitment to upholding the Constitution and rejecting authoritarianism during the final stages of President Donald Trump's first term administration.
He is one of the most distinguished, articulate, audacious, revered, and intellectually gifted generals ever known. His kind are rare. His impromptu digest on critical race theory delivered in response to a question posed by Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida during a congressional hearing a few years ago remains the most cited and illuminating since the theory has assumed a prominent place in American intellectual discourse.
He spoke candidly about the theory, advocating for an open-minded approach to understanding its implications. "I've read Mao Zedong. I've read Karl Marx. I've read Lenin. That doesn't make me a communist. So what is wrong with understanding — having some situational understanding about the country for which we are here to defend? And I personally find it offensive that we are accusing the United States military, our general officers, our commissioned, noncommissioned officers of being, quote, 'woke' or something else, because we're studying some theories that are out there."
However, the current leadership has taken a different stance, with DEI initiatives, for instance, facing rejection, and discussions about race being labelled as anti-establishment.
Despite these challenges, America's history shows that the nation has an enormous capacity to overcome significant obstacles. And like slavery, it is likely that this moment, too, will pass, and the country will continue to evolve and grow.
In the instant video, General Milley emphasised that military professionals take an oath to the Constitution, not to individuals or dictators. He underlined the importance of protecting and defending the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
When President Trump labelled the 2020 presidential election as fraudulent without providing evidence, Gen Milley implicitly stated that President Trump could not automatically rely on the armed forces to retain his presidency. He condemned the Capitol Hill attack in unmistakable terms.
His leadership and commitment to the Constitution have been widely recognised, and his actions serve as a significant example of the importance of upholding democratic values and the rule of law.
However, not everybody loves him. According to a 60 Minutes interview, the former Commander-in-Chief called for his ex..., which was unexpected, though unpresidential.
