The Consequences of Elon Musk's and DOGE's Actions on Helpless Americans and USAID May 26, 2025

Since assuming substantial control of the corridors of power, the limited resources the helpless victims possessed, which are insignificant to Elon Musk and the government he serves, have been stripped away. The jobs that sustained them, providing a means to put food on their tables without burdening the government, are now lost. What has happened to impoverished Americans since January 20, 2025, is occurring at USAID locations across the globe.

As Fareeq Zakari aptly noted on CNN yesterday, May 25, 2025, "USAID spending accounts for less than 1% of federal spending, yet it sustains millions of lives worldwide."

Despite comprising less than 1% of the U.S. federal budget, USAID plays a vital role in sustaining millions of lives globally. In fiscal year 2023, the agency managed over $40 billion, funding critical programmes in health, education, and humanitarian aid across more than 100 countries. These initiatives have been instrumental in combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis and in providing disaster relief and development assistance.

However, under the leadership of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), USAID has been erroneously branded a "criminal organisation," igniting widespread criticism from public health experts and humanitarian organisations. They caution that defunding or dismantling USAID could jeopardise vital services and lead to increased mortality rates among vulnerable populations.

The proposed cuts to USAID's budget are not merely a matter of fiscal policy; they represent a direct threat to global health and well-being. As Zakari emphasises, the agency's spending, though a small fraction of federal expenditure, is a lifeline for millions.

Elon Musk's actions, driven by a desire to streamline government operations, risk dismantling a critical component of international aid and development.

At home, the US is facing significant challenges, including rising joblessness, poverty, and soaring grocery prices, amidst turbulent and unpredictable White House economic policies. It is difficult to perceive greatness or feel its impact when these issues persist.

Let us unite in our pursuit of a more compassionate world in which USAID's vital work continues to inspire hope and transform lives.

In conclusion, USAID's work is not only a reflection of American values but also a testament to its commitment to global humanitarian efforts. It is essential that the voices of those who rely on USAID's assistance are heard and their needs met, rather than being sidelined in the pursuit of budgetary cuts
