The Banishment of Emir Sanusi: An Aberration - An Affront on Our Constitutional Democracy

No one, not even the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has the power or the authority to force another Nigerian into exile. Such power is not in our law or in our constitution. When Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi of the famed Benin Empire was forced into exile in 1897, it was a sequel to foreign invasion and conquest. Today, we are an independent nation-state where democracy is the vogue. Governor Ganduje can forcefully remove Mr Sanusi from the throne as he deems fit, but to subject him to banishment and forced exile is beyond the pale. Simply put, the Governor has no such power. Mr. Sanusi is not a criminal. He has not been tried and convicted of any crime. His liberty, his freedom, and his right to live anywhere he pleases must be restored without condition. I don't talk on my own.
