While you were "trending" on the ridiculous, President Buhari made an elevator pitch a few days ago, signaling his readiness to enter the 2019 Presidential race - pushing a narrative of "Making the Change to Work." He came, made his pitch, and gone with the wind. And there was no wailer in sight. Take it or leave it, this time around, he is motivated because nothing has changed. Good talk, no doubt. That pitch doesn't bear the imprint of APC as a party or the blessings of Asiwaju.
Grotesque and ludicrous that narrative may appear to common sense, that's the best the President's handlers or speech writers could contrive at this point in time. Because nothing really has changed. But I call it hallow rituals. And the "wailers" are once again sleeping on their rights.
You won a Presidential race on the philosophy of change. Now you are asking for a second chance because the change did not happen. What a sad day in the Nigerian Political commentary!
The progressive commentators whose essays and blogs his handlers invaded in 2013, 2014, and 2015 gratuitously to develop the progressive manifesto and talking points are gone for good. No favorable essay or anti-Jonathan power points for a guide. And their emptiness and fictitious acclaim to political sophistry have surfaced unhinged.
I am sharing this video not because I seek scrutiny from anyone regarding the performance of the President in the past three years, but to showcase (1) his audacity and knacks for daring, (2) the paucity of presidential materials within the present leadership clique, and (3), the timidity of all the Atikus in our political system. I will explain briefly.
Here is an incumbent who, without any element of remorse, reneged on every modicum of his campaign promises; who in every respect imaginable is bigotry and nepotism personified; whose performance as Minister of Petroleum Resources is appallingly woeful; an incumbent whose bogus progressive credentials have irredeemably dissipated.
And yes, a President who never had any cause or reason to exhibit a sense of contrite in his support of cattle herders whose killing spree and conquering mission are turning into a trend unprecedented in the history of nomadic exploits in Nigeria. And above all, a President who knowingly and unrepentantly ceded a progressive mandate to unwavering unbelievers (cabal) in the progressive manifesto, pushing an ideology that has no rhythm in democratic values or egalitarianism.
Under him, the term equal rights and justice has become an aberration, a mere grammatical expression. And he is still standing, making a pitch for a second chance!
One would have thought that with all these failings around him, there would be a massive deluge of Presidential hopefuls everywhere, pitching to take advantage of the obvious vulnerability that encapsulates the incumbent. Sadly, there is no one in sight grinding to the beat of skelewa oozing unperturbably from the Ota Farm.
Two days after the President made his broadcast, we are yet to hear from any potential candidate, viable or unviable, who we can candidly and objectively be considered electable. And if that is not a tragedy in our political system, I wonder what would surpass that.
